For Once I Agree With Simon

This week on American Idol Island, I agreed with Simon Cowell.  The first two performers (Anoop who was annoying and Meagan who was even more annoying, if that’s possible) just plain sucked.  The show really started when Danny came on stage.   Tonight he did a Rascal Flatts song (“What Hurts the Most“) that brought me (and probably some of the audience) to tears.  The poor guy just lost his Grandfather last week and I’m sure he’s still grieving his wife.  It seemed to be a fitting song dedicated to both of them.

Allison sang “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt.  I thought she was pretty good even though she looked like she was trying to channel Cyndi Lauper.  Seemed like all the judges loved the singing but wanted to burn her clothes.  ”Something out of the Adams Family” said Simon.  She’s 16 for crying out loud.  Leave the girl alone.

Scott MacIntyre’s rendition of “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel was, as usual of late, karaoke-ish.    Time for Scott to go so that someone else has a chance.  Sorry Scott, you’re very talented but when put up against the likes of Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert, they leave you in the dust.  However, Simon loved him.  I’m just wondering if I was watching the same performance.

Lil Rounds doing Celine Dion’s “I Surrender” … um … she did a credible performance as a potential Diva, however she’s no Celine.  It seemed a little pushed.  When she was reaching for those long high notes, she couldn’t quite get there.  I’m sure the judges will love her though .. let’s see (yes I’m typing this live as it’s on).  Randy, on the fence; Kara, still sees more potential but gave her a pass; Paula agreed with Kara and told her young it down; Simon thought she sounded like a Wedding Singer.  Go Lil, learn some contemporary songs before you get voted off.   Although it was touching when Randy hugged Lil’s little girl after he was “mean to Mommy”.

Kris Allen should probably go home too, he’s been here too long.  He’s good, but not in the same league either than the top five (Adam, Danny, Allison, Lil, Matt).  “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone” will surely get him some votes from the Tweeners.  Have to admit though, tonight he was good.

I was pleasantly surprised by Matt Giraud tonight.  He’s really good.  I passed him off as a non-contender before, but I liked it.  Funny that Paula didn’t though, she likes everyone.  OK, they loved Scott but not Matt?  I don’t get it … he could be in trouble tonight.

Let’s see if Adam can hang on to that wave he rode last week with “Play That Funky Music“.  I didn’t really like it.  I had a flashback to Rockstar INXS and thought I was watching JD Fortune performing a Broadway Melody on stage.  Too bad they booted JD from the band … The judges loved Adam.  I think he’s too big for this stage.

I’m not sure who’ll be in the bottom three tomorrow.  Probably:  Megan, Anoop, and Lil would be my bet.  Wish I could vote up here in the Great White North.

All I can say is, I can’t wait for So You Think You Can Dance Canada to start back up.  Did I mention, Yay Nico?? ;-)

*Update* Well Meagan got the boot.  She looked like she was on drugs tonight.  I think that if she hadn’t pissed off Simon with her remark about not caring, she could have stayed.  I was wrong on my guess, Lil was safe, but Scott was in the bottom three.  Glad the warbler’s gone home.  Maybe Scott’s next.

That’s One Angry Cow…

On Friday, Caity woke up with her usual bed head.  She has really fine hair and whenever she sleeps, be it a nap or a proper bed sleep, she always wakes up with her hair in a big matted mess.  Usually it sticks up everywhere and she looks so funny.  It takes me about ten minutes to detangle it and if I don’t use that spray detangler on it first, forget it.

On Friday, we had an added bonus.  Caity had a cowlick.  You know that shock of hair that looks like you had been licked by a cow?  She had this perfect curl at the front of her head that stuck straight out.

“Caity, you have a cowlick” I said to her.

“Uh huh!” Caity said knowingly.

“What does a cow say, Caity?  Moo?” I asked.

“Grrrrroooooowwwwwllllllrrrrrrrrrggghhhhhhh!!!!” she snarled.

“Wow Caity, that’s one angry cow!” I laughed.  I wonder what kind of twisted “Old MacDonald” song she’s heard…

Tough decision tonight on who had the best performance on American Idol Island.  My boy, Danny Gokey was fabulous and completely in his element.  I still think he’s a ‘contendah’.  Despite what Simon said “clumsy and amateurish”, he nailed it.

Adam Lambert however, continues to be in a league of his own.  I almost didn’t recognize him with no make up and his hair in a pompadour, reminiscent of Elvis Presley.  With the exception of last week when he sang that horrible Middle-Eastern inspired version of Ring of Fire

(I’m sure Johnny Cash is still rolling over in his grave over that one).  He could have killed that song, instead he just killed it.  Tonight’s version of Tracks of My Tears was awesome.  He should make it to the finals, he really seems like the strongest contestant.  He certainly has the most complete package – looks, sound, personality.  If he doesn’t make it here, he should go back to Broadway.  I’m still not sure why he’s allowed to compete if he’s already appeared in plays on Broadway.  I would have thought that would have made him a professional musician … what do I know? … I intend on downloading this week’s performance for my iPod.

Allison Iraheta is pretty amazing too.  Her talent far belies her years.  Kara’s right, you can’t teach (what she’s got).

Sorry, it’s time for Scott to go.  I was rooting for him for a while now but he’s going to get left in the dust.  Same with Meagan Joy.  Her warbly voice drives me nuts.  Michael Sarver - yucky performance tonight, sorry.

Anoop Desai has an incredible voice but I’m getting tired of the ballads.  I was disappointed with Lil Rounds tonight too – fantastic pipes, but wrong song.  We need contestants who can do more …

Let’s see who goes home this week and what next week brings … my guess, either Scott, Meagan or Michael.  The others seem reasonably safe.  Survey says…?

*Update* It was Michael’s turn tonight.  Good luck, Michael.

But Five’s Almost Twelve … !

I had to leave work early today because Lexy’s still not over the tummy bug she had last week and had a bit of an incident at school.    I left Caity at daycare mainly because when I picked up Lex, it was time for Caity’s nap and Caity without a nap is like a Bear with sore bits.

I worked from home for a bit and when it was time for me to pick up Caity I tried to get Lexy moving.

“Come on Lex, let’s go”, I said.

“But I want to stay here.”

“Lexy I’m not legally allowed to leave you home alone.”

“But Mom.  I’m five years old!”

“And…?”

“So I can stay here by myself!?!” Lexy said hopefully.

“Lex, I can’t leave you alone until you’re twelve.”

“But I’m almost twelve!”

*Sigh* I swear this kid is going to be a lawyer.  She loves to argue.  And no, I didn’t leave her alone, even with her sound reasoning.

a)  You know you spend too much time on your computer, and not enough with your family, when your toddler climbs on your lap to get between you and your laptop.

Seriously.  Caity did this the other day.  I was working on a Presentation for work, at home and Caity was sitting beside me, babbling away, munching on her crackers.  I had the laptop on my lap, legs up on the coffee table.  Suddenly Caity stood up, swung her leg over my lap and sat down on my arms.  My hands were still on my keyboard.  Facing me, Caity grabs my face and starts babbling.  I can only imagine she was saying “Mommy, it’s my time now”.  Alex was sitting on the other side of the couch and the two of us were laughing so hard.  “OK, Caity, I get the hint.”

*Update* As if the guilt from the kids isn’t enough, now my female cat, Charlie, is trying to crawl in my lap while I’m typing this.  She’s currently sitting on my mouse, purring, every now and again looking up at me, hopefully.  I have to use the mouse on the keyboard because her fat ass is on the regular mouse.  She meows angrily at me and swats at my hand if I stop paying attention to her … sheesh, critic.

b) I thought carpet cleaners were supposed to remove smells, not make them worse.

Caity’s had a tummy bug this past week.  It’s been heartbreaking when she points to her stomach and says in a plaintive cry, “Tumm-mmeee”.  “Does your tummy hurt, Caity?”.  Caity nods her head.  She’s had really bad runs all week.

On the weekend, she threw up after her morning bottle.  Anyone who has cleaned up milk-vomit before knows it’s particularly nasty.  Luckily I was still in bed so Alex got that pleasure.  He didn’t get it all out of the carpet unfortunately and … well … it was pretty stinky.  He picked up some spot cleaner and managed to get the vomit smell out of the carpet, but it ended up making our house smell like stinky feet.  Seriously, it was bad.  Yesterday we borrowed the steam cleaner from my brother and got some of that powder stuff that you sprinkle on the carpet.  After two applications and vacuuming, it doesn’t smell like feet anymore.  We’re still planning on steam cleaning the carpets though.  Who knows what it will end up smelling like after that…

c) Cats, despite what they think, are not supposed to eat crackers.

Caity was getting her bum changed this morning before going to Terri’s.  Caity was munching on crackers again - I think they’re her favourite snack.  She put the bowl containing the crackers down beside her and Charlie immediately ran over to it.  Caity didn’t think that she should share her food with the cat and immediately tried to shoo her away.  This is particularly annoying when trying to change her bum at the same time.

Charlie is nuts about crackers.  Anytime one of us takes the cracker package out of the cupboard, she comes running from where ever she is in the house.   If Alex sits at the kitchen table, eating soup with crackers, Charlie can be found sitting on the end of the couch, staring him down until he relents and gives her some.  We cannot leave any crackers on any surface the cat can get to.  She has been caught, with her head in the bowl, happily munching away on the ill gotten crackers.   If we’ve gone out and one of the kids left her snack out, we have to throw it away when we return, because it’s probably been licked  and partially nommed by the cat.

Sometimes I’ll hear Lexy in the other room “Nooooo Charlie, that’s my snack!”.  She makes a good little hoover.

d) You know it’s cold in the house when …

I think I live in the most energy inefficient house there is.  I loved this house when we were first looking for a home.  I was about 6 months pregnant with Lexy at the time and was really starting to Nest.  It was driving me crazy, I needed a home for my baby.  It is a nice house, about 17 years old.  It was built during the time when they actually left some room between houses – not putting them as close together as possible.  It’s not a big house, but it has a nice sized backyard for the kids and a decent front.  The original owners upgraded the windows in the front of the house, but they’re still drafty.  The front has those windows that have two panes of glass and crank open.  I’m not sure what they’re called.  The windows in the back and sides, however, are another story.  They are single paned and slide.  We have plastic over them year round so we don’t throw as much heat or air conditioning out the window as we would otherwise.  In the Winter, you can feel the wind coming through the sliding door.  It gets cold.

Yesterday it was a little chilly in the house even though it was so nice outside.  Caity was playing in the Family room beside me on the couch.  She got up.  She walked into the hallway and came back with a pile of clothes.  She proceeded to put on her winter mittens, Lexy’s hat and scarf.  Her scarf was thrown on the couch.

“You cold, Caity?” I asked her, smiling.

“Uh huh,” she said, nodding.

I guess it’s time to save up for some new windows …

An Injured Paw?

Ever since Caity was born, she’s had this irresistible little thing that she does, that I’m sure all young children do.  When she’s sleeping, she curls her little toes and I really want to munch on her feet.  It is so sweet and it emphasizes, at least to me, just how young and vulnerable she is.  When she gets so happy and excited that she simply can’t stand it, she draws her hands up to her chin, fingers curled under and giggles.  Even her eyes are smiling when she does that.

Sometime last week I was putting Caity to bed and I put her in her one-piece footy pyjamas that I’ve pretty much kept her in all winter as she likes to kick off her covers.  Caity was munching on some ‘circle treats’ a.k.a. those little Ritz sandwiches with the cheese in the middle.  Lexy named them, not me.

Anyway.  I thought Caity was done eating her treats and I just finished changing her bum and stuck her legs in the footy parts of the pyjamas.  I zipped her up and helped her to her feet.  “Ta-da!” I said.

Caity took one step towards the kitchen, stopped, lifted her little foot in the air like an injured paw, toes curled under in impossible cuteness.  Through her tears, she said “Mommy, ow.”  She didn’t know what to do.  Every time she put her little foot down it hurt.  I took her foot out of her jammies and inspected it.  There were what appeared to be crumbs between her toes.  I brushed off her foot and put it back in the jammy.  “Better?” I asked her.  “Uh huh” she nodded and sniffed.  Caity took another step in the kitchen and repeated “ow…!”.  Up again, in curled perfection went the little paw.  Again I took her foot out and brushed it off, wondering what was going on.

Yes, at this point I’m kind of tired too.  I feel the need to point this fact out right about now.

Caity took yet another tenuous step towards the stairs and repeated “ow… Mommy!”.  OK.  At this point I’m determined to figure out what’s going on.  I took her foot out, again covered in crumbs.  I put the footy part of her pyjama inside out and what do you know.  Out fell the remains of a circle treat.  and. a. lot. of . crumbs

So now I’m laughing.  Caity’s looking at me with tears in her eyes.  The cat’s looking at both of us like we’re crazy.  Apparently sometime while she was eating she dropped the circle treat into her jammy and it must have fallen down to her feet when she stood up.

*sigh* Chalk another one up in the Mommy Hall of Fame…

Five minutes ago Lexy lost one of her top front teeth.  I suspect we’ll see the tooth fairy tonight …. her adult tooth can be seen in the hole where her baby tooth once sat.  At least she didn’t swallow this one!

Grandma and I took Lexy to her very first movie yesterday.  We went to see Coraline, the 3D movie currently playing throughout Ontario.  Lexy was very excited to go and she didn’t quite understand the whole movie-going process.  I told her there would be a lot of seats and a very big screen.  A screen bigger than our house.  Her eyes opened wide like saucers when she heard that one.  I said to her that one of the best parts is that you get to sit in these really comfy seats and while you’re watching the movie, you get to eat popcorn and drink orange pop!  That did it, she was sold.

I also told her that for this particular movie, you’d need to wear special glasses.  She was a little uncertain about that.

So we pick up Grandma and headed over to the Theatre.  The man behind the ticket counter gave us the glasses we needed and Lexy still looked skeptical.  After we were seated in the really big room with the gi-normous screen, with the popcorn on our laps, the commercials started.  I could see that these particular commercials were also in 3D because of the distinct red-blue out-of-focus look all 3D movies have without your glasses on.  I told Lexy and Grandma to quickly put on their glasses.  Lexy put hers on and said “Wow!”.  We saw commercials for the upcoming Aliens vs. Monsters movie – in 3D!, the new Ice Age – Dawn of the Dinosaurs movie, in 3D! and then, our movie started.

Lexy sat between Grandma and I and stared in awe at the big screen.  The movie was so neat and it was a great story to boot.  The opening sequence is amazing and really plays the 3D technology to its best advantage.  When the giant needle ‘came’ at us from the screen, Lexy said really loudly “THEY’RE TRYING TO KILL ME!!!!”.  Those around us who could hear her started laughing.  I quickly shushed her, Lexy not being used to having to be quiet during a movie.  It was very cute.

A few minutes in, Lexy kept playing with her glasses.  She’d pull them up and down and she said to me “Mommy, I can see the movie OK without the glasses.”  I told her to keep them on, but she still played with them.

We were a little hesitant going to this movie because it looked like it could be scary, but five, almost six, is a good age for it.  Lexy said she LOVED it.  Grandma and I really enjoyed it too and Grandma wants to go on another movie date with Lexy (and hopefully me too) again soon. Well, we know which movies we want to see!

If you get the chance, go see this movie.  It’s worth the extra dollar for the glasses.  They’re not the cheap red and blue paper ones, these ones look more like sunglasses and they work great.  You can either recycle them at the end, or take the glasses home with you for next time.

I’ve been away from the kids overnight again.  I was up in Port Elgin at a client charity event.  It went very well, but I missed my girls.  I called Lexy this morning and she chatted my ear off.  Caity refused to talk to me on the phone.  She just held it to her ear and I could hear her breathing on the other end of the line.  Obviously Caity is unconcerned with Telus’ ridiculous Roaming and Long Distance Rates.

For the past little while, I’ve noticed my two year old is really talking lately.  She’s always babbled entire conversations, but lately there have been a lot more real words.  For example:

Yessh = Yes

Vvvvaaaaatttt??? = (When called from the other room) Yes Mommy, what would you like?

Peas = Please

No! Mabby be kwi-et! = Mavvy be quiet! (our male cat)

Sharll off da table = Charlie get off the table (our female cat)

Oh dere is da Sharll = I see Charlie

Good num Mum-mum = Dinner was delicious Mom

Nahmah! = Grandma

Eye-ee = Lexy

No Mummy, Dada dink = Mom stop using Daddy’s glass

Moy Mummy peas, moy? = More Mom please

Tank ooh = Thank you

Tinkle tinkle up up up = Twinkle twinkle little star

Hug! = Mom you’ve been on that damn computer too long and I want to cuddle.

That’s my cue … I’m outta here.

um Wow

I think we just saw the winner of American Idol Island.  Despite the fact that they sang the gloved one’s songs, Adam Lambert took control and sang the perfect song for him “Black or White”.

He was awesome.  Sorry Danny, but he brought the house down.  Out of a very talented group of singers, he stands above.  One wonders why he’s not recording already.

Even Simon liked him, and that’s saying something.
