What Would You Do?

I’m sure this is a no-brainer, but if one of your kids needed help, what would you do?  Would you hesitate, or just react?  What if you had it within your power to save their life, or vastly improve the quality of it, would you?  What if it were a complete stranger?

There have been a lot of sleepless hours these past two weeks.  There’s been a lot of things going through my mind, and it’s all seemed like a jumbled, tangled mess of ideas and questions and thoughts, prayers and hopes.

Alex gets admitted tomorrow.  The surgery is in two days.  He is getting a new kidney.  His Dad is giving it to him.  This is a lot to take in, the reality of it having mostly sunk in but not quite yet.  It will become very real, very quickly.

There are many stories in the newspapers about Firemen rescuing countless people from dangerous situations.  Without regard for their own life, they willingly battle blazes to save someone else’s life.  It has long been said that Firefighters are heros.

Did I mention that my Father-in-Law is a Firefighter?

On Thursday he will be helping someone who needs him the most.  His son.  I can’t thank him enough, words are not adequate.

He is a strong and good man.  He didn’t hesitate when he heard Alex needed a transplant.  He said “where do I sign up?  Who do I talk to?”, he asked without being asked to get tested. 

He’s doing it for his son.
