We Have Pee!

*Updated Update*:  After a long, very long night, we’re still not sure of the outcome.  The Doctor went back in, shortened the vein and twisted the kidney to try for a better fit.  The artery is working fine and there is good blood flow to the kidney, but it’s not producing urine.  There was a blood clot in the vein and the Doctor hopes there isn’t more inside the kidney itself.  He figured that when Alex was under anesthesia, his stomach muscles were relaxed - when he woke up, they tightened and that very large kidney smooshed the vein.

He hopes he’ll pee again in the next couple of days.

He said they haven’t lost a Live Donor Kidney in years.

He said he’s probably done more Kidney Transplants than anyone else in Canada.  He is hopeful.  He is sorry.

My boy doesn’t deserve this shit he’s going through.  He can’t seem to catch a break.  We’re optimistic that it will ‘kickstart’ in the next couple of days and he’s in the best hospital in Canada for the transplant.

I’m going home to get very drunk.  My brain is fried and I am so drained.  Goodnight.

**Update** Alex is back in surgery :(   The damn kidney is so big and apparently his hips are narrow.  There is blood flow but not as much pee as they’d like.  The Doctor thinks the ‘pee line’ might be kinked by the Kidney.  Gonna be a long night for my poor boy …. **  :*(

The surgery is done.  The donor kidney was apparently really big and the Doctor had a hard time positioning it because of its size, but it ‘pinked’ up right away and he even peed a little!

FREAKIN’ AWESOME!

Going to see him soon, he hasn’t hit the recovery room yet.

We take this as a sign – for about 15 minutes prior to the Surgeon coming out, the church bells were ringing next door.  They rang for about half an hour.  We took this as a sign …

Alex’s Mother and I are sitting in the waiting room as I write this.  The kidney taken from his Dad is apparently a very good one – his Step Mom said something about it having two tubes instead of the normal one (whatever that means) and it’s supposed to be a good thing.  The odds of success have been elevated because of the quality of the kidney.  Marc’s currently back in his room, his surgery is complete.

Alex is probably in the middle of his surgery.  We don’t know anything yet.  He was brought in a bit after 12 and the surgery should take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.

I was impressed however with the quality of the food in the cafeteria.  It’s a far cry from the Scarborough General Hospital’s dry french fries and clumpy gravy.  Today was Mexican Fiesta day and the food was really good!  Can’t find the bar though …

That’s it for now, I’ll write again once he’s out.

I have a bottle of Soutbrook Vineyard’s Framboise in the basement that I’ve forgotten about for years, should be nice and mellow now … think I’ll dip into that tonight – it’ll be quiet, the kids are at the Sitters’ having a sleep over and Alex is .. well .. here.
